Our long beautiful fall has given us the opportunity to wish for snow and just in time this season. At this point the halls have been decked or not as we slip into the holiday. And enjoy the beauty, togetherness and contentment Christmas brings.
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!
Fall Trend Forecast
Fall is a the time of year that ushers in new ideas for home. A couple of strong trends are emerging. I am seeing copper reappear in modern forms. It is showing up paired with perennial favorites of gold and silver. All that glitters is good and copper is the new IT metal. Copper is always complimentary to the inky indigos that we are all loving. I am also seeing textile wall hangings make a claim for the NOW statement piece. These examples go beyond macramé and are textural art forms. It a natural progression from our obsession with knit. Fall trends are rooted in organic materials.

Oh yes. If these kitchens could travel they would be at Fashion Week. These powerful spaces are stunning. Making no apologies for their sleek silhouettes and striking stature. Black kitchens. This is happening.

As summer stretches into the horizon the blush of the season beckons even more. The new pastels, including Rosé feel very current and fresh. It lacks the brown quality of decades old mauve. For some pink is reviled and intolerable. It is a token of a bygone era and symbol of conforming to oppressive ideas. To me it is absolute sunshine. Choosing to embrace it today for the same reason many of my older colleagues previously rejected it. We are seeking modern and opening new worlds. What we want to see is something different, something imbued with the character of life itself.

A painterly brushstroke captures the mood and intention of an artist. This application on furniture carries the attributes of a painting. It’s spontaneous, dynamic and adaptable to direction. The palettes are endless. Fabric paints are widely available and it’s just as easy to use additives if you have latex paint lying around. I recently suggested to a client we paint her dining chairs to very loosely tell a story so when guests are present the dining room would still be animated. I would just as easily order a new piece and paint it, but before you recover or donate your tired old furniture consider a painterly approach.
I collaborated with an enormously talented artist Nina Santos in updating these tired chairs.

I can’t seem to get enough of this bleached blonde wood. The finish celebrates the wood species and it’s natural characteristics. I am very fond of how clean and chalk-y it makes a space. This finish is super forgiving of pets and other sources of patina. White ash and white birch are best suited to this finish but I have seen beautiful results with bleached walnut, hickory and pear.

I am in love with Stella McCartney’s whimsical Spring Collection. In the spirit of love and season I was inspired to create this table scene.
The SLC Olympics were incredible. I attended the opening ceremonies and many of the events. At the opening ceremonies I felt in sync with such a broad collective, participating in unison was a very profound experience. The state was celebrating and all of the party guests were interesting people.
In the spirit of the Olympics, and in support of the dedication and commitment the athletes, I give you the gold.
