Wicked Cool Wallpaper, The Dark Side of The Wall

It’s the season of longer evenings and deep, saturated color. Wallpaper with dark fields or subjects add depth and contrast to a space. It also gives muscle to subjects that might be considered overly feminine.

Recently in a Holladay home I selected an over scale floral wallpaper that initially reads like photography and on closer inspection reads like a painting. It’s painterly brushstrokes has visitors scratching their heads. This fantastic illusion is unexpected and impactful.

This wallpaper was for a client who had an edgier aesthetic. It is black on white but could have just as easily been realized in reverse. The flowers are made up of pixelated black widows. They say their guests delight in discovering the spiders.

Here are a few other wallpapers from the dark side of the wall.

Painterly Furniture

A painterly brushstroke captures the mood and intention of an artist. This application on furniture carries the attributes of a painting. It’s spontaneous, dynamic and adaptable to direction. The palettes are endless. Fabric paints are widely available and it’s just as easy to use additives if you have latex paint lying around. I recently suggested to a client we paint her dining chairs to very loosely tell a story so when guests are present the dining room would still be animated. I would just as easily order a new piece and paint it, but before you recover or donate your tired old furniture consider a painterly approach.

I collaborated with an enormously talented artist Nina Santos in updating these tired chairs.

Go for the Gold

The SLC Olympics were incredible. I attended the opening ceremonies and many of the events. At the opening ceremonies I felt in sync with such a broad collective, participating in unison was a very profound experience. The state was celebrating and all of the party guests were interesting people.

In the spirit of the Olympics, and in support of the dedication and commitment the athletes,  I give you the gold.

Valentine’s Day

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Setting a table for those you love is a fun way to celebrate your Valentine(s). And staying in surrounded only by your closest sweethearts beats swimming in crowds celebrating young love. The flowers are from Roots, SLC Utah and the arrows are from Fletcher and Fox.
