Seated In Satisfaction

Sometimes we need touchstones to remind ourselves that there is room in the world for every creative voice. Us “creatives” need the work and the world needs to experience what we have to give it. That’s why designing and seeing this chair realized provides such smoldering satisfaction. My intention for this chair is placing them on the front deck of the soon to be completed surf shack and restaurant on a secluded beach in Rancho Santana, Nicaragua.  A resort project I am continuing to work on.

My inspiration was one of my favorite clients and dear friends. A disarmingly laid back, cool couple who know how to find delight in their own pleasure of life. A skill perhaps only the most actualized develop.

The rocking chair captures the tranquility, fantasy and the adventure of its place of origin. The chair is executed with exorbitant attention to detail and was informed by its makers. It encapsulates the grace and vision of the resort’s founders when they rode in for miles on horseback and decided to chance on the beauty. The chair is my offering and I am bringing them into the US.

Here’s to inspiration and knowing there’s room for everyone to be seated at the creative table.

Pantry Perfection

This time of year is synonymous with fresh starts, clean slates and organization. With the very best intentions we push against the unraveling that happens over time and evitable disequilibrium. I find my mind is clear and content when organized. And take great pleasure in pursuing order and perusing others’ efforts. Sometimes much more of the later…

Quick Tips:

Keep Like with Like – Cans Together by Food Product, Glass Vessels and Bowls Together, Wood Platters and Cutting Boards Together, Paper Products Together

Decant from Original Packaging – Pastas, Loose Foods in Baskets, Snacks in Glass Jars, Raw Ingredients in Glass or Clear Push Top Containers

Spacing – Vary Shelves, Shelves for Cans 9-10 inches between Shelves 10-12 depth, Appliance and Bulk 16-18 between Shelves 18-24 depth, Plan for Deeper Ledge or Counter

Whether you are a storage phenom or a voyeur peeking into the pantry to see how other people really live. These are examples of going beyond the cupboard and creating smashing pantries.

Ceramic Lighting

Ceramic lighting has an organic enveloping warmth. I have designed  a few pieces and have found many others who have embraced the material with incredible results. Once you have seen it, you will crave it.

Painterly Furniture

A painterly brushstroke captures the mood and intention of an artist. This application on furniture carries the attributes of a painting. It’s spontaneous, dynamic and adaptable to direction. The palettes are endless. Fabric paints are widely available and it’s just as easy to use additives if you have latex paint lying around. I recently suggested to a client we paint her dining chairs to very loosely tell a story so when guests are present the dining room would still be animated. I would just as easily order a new piece and paint it, but before you recover or donate your tired old furniture consider a painterly approach.

I collaborated with an enormously talented artist Nina Santos in updating these tired chairs.

Romantic Valentine’s Dinner

I am in love with Stella McCartney’s whimsical Spring Collection. In the spirit of love and season I was inspired to create this table scene.

Go for the Gold

The SLC Olympics were incredible. I attended the opening ceremonies and many of the events. At the opening ceremonies I felt in sync with such a broad collective, participating in unison was a very profound experience. The state was celebrating and all of the party guests were interesting people.

In the spirit of the Olympics, and in support of the dedication and commitment the athletes,  I give you the gold.

Office Update, Before and After

The space didn’t reflect the young, sharp business owner and his executive staff. They needed something smartly updated and mindful of investing too much into a space that this successful company might outgrow. I chose to turn my back on elements that would drain a budget and chose to focus on high impact. We couldn’t be more unanimously pleased with the results.

Mantels by Design as Seen on KUTV, Channel 2 Fresh Living

DSC_1197A mantel is typically focal point and is often the strongest architectural feature in the space. It should suit the space in terms of scale and design language. A few tips: allow for at least a 10 inch depth mantel and install an outlet on mantel shelf where it cannot be seen for holiday décor or lamps.

I generally prefer TVs away from the mantel on a side wall or cabinetry if it’s suitable for viewing. Generally this is best when the space is formal or when the mantel is high. Typically I suggest a TV above the mantel if the space is casual and mantel is 62 inches above the finished floor or lower. Above the mantel is also suitable if the majority of viewing is standing or lying down. I have on occasion placed TVs below a mantel where they seem to disappear.  This works best in a wide feature, where the TV is viewed from a seating position and in a room where TV isn’t the primary function. I have long ago gotten over the compulsion to hide a TV.
